A Celebration of Unity
...…and a big dose of what the world needs now.
When we heard that the students and faculty at Heritage Hall school in Oklahoma City were showing up to celebrate something called UNITY DAY, the Heroes In Waiting crew knew we had to show up too! After all, when we teach kids how to be kind to themselves and others, how to recognize bullying behavior, and how to step up and stop it in its tracks…the expected outcome is exactly that: unity.
Now in its fifth year, Heritage Hall’s annual Unity Day was launched in 2018 to help the school raise awareness for and celebrate things like empathy, community, kindness, and other awesome things the world needs now. According to Heritage Hall student Addison Littlejohn, “Unity Day is a day that the whole school gets to come together to practice lots of building exercises and learn a lot about each other…to feel welcomed and not have to worry about our differences and just be happy together.”
Kicking off this year’s school wide-celebration was one of our heroes, FOX25 morning personality and Oklahoma City Thunder hype man Malcolm Tubbs. He brought the love and brought down the house with a powerful personal story about loving and accepting others, and showing up for those who don’t feel accepted.
And the lower, middle, and upper-school students took it to heart, including senior Davis Park. “It’s actually amazing that we all have different perspectives that we can share with one another and feel less alone,” he said.
The Heroes In Waiting team is so thankful to the entire Charger Nation for the warm welcome, and for sharing with us an experience we’ll never forget. What a privilege to witness connection, cooperation, kindness, listening, and courage (so much courage) in real time, just when the world really needs it.
