Why Professional Development?
Teachers, administration, and staff play a vital role in bullying prevention and intervention. Beyond modeling respectful relationships and developing a positive school climate, attending regular anti-bullying training significantly improves teachers' abilities to effectively respond to bullying situations. Research consistently shows that ongoing professional development is a key component of an effective, whole-school approach to bullying prevention. Students themselves report that if they believe their teachers don’t know how to effectively intervene in bullying situations, they will not seek help. Students are more likely to report bullying if they believe:
- the teacher knows what to do
- the teacher will respond sensitively and effectively
- they will be treated with respect and provided support
- the teacher won't make things worse
